How do I hook up my Yamaha Trumpet Silent Brass mute to my Mac to record on Garageband?
The best way to do this is to take a male-to-male 1/8″ stereo mini jack patch cable and run it from the headphone output on your Silent Brass amp to either the line-in jack or the microphone-in jack on your Mac. Most desktop Macs have both, but the laptops frequently only have a line-in. That’s if you have one of the older-style amps or the ST9 Personal Studio as part of your Silent Brass setup (but not the ST5 Personal Studio).
If you have the ST5, it uses 1/4″ mini jacks, so you’ll need a 1/4″ mini jack to 1/8″ mini jack adapter to take it to your Mac. This is an odd cable type, so what you’ll likely want to do is get the same cable and add a part that’s similar to this:

This is a 1/8″ stereo to 1/4″ stereo adapter, you’ll need it to connect to the ST5.
The cable you’ll likely want is similar to this:

This is a 1/8″ stereo (male end) to 1/8″ stereo (male end) patch cable; this will be what links your Silent Brass system to your Mac.
I used Radio Shack and Musician’s Friend to find these; you can likely get the same components a lot cheaper at your local Wal-Mart — just make sure you double-check the kind of component you’re buying.
