Will learning trumpet screw up my tuba embrochure?
I want to learn over the summer trumpet but I can already play tuba, trombone and baritone. My band instructor says that tuba is a priority, so will learning trumpet mess up how well I play tuba?
To be honest with you, I think it will change you embouchure. It will make tuba a lot harder as you go along. As for switching to the trumpet, the embouchure is much stronger. Honestly, I play horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and trumpet, but I do notice a great difference in my embouchure as I adjust to these instruments. I think you can do both, but there is a wide difference and it will tend to put some strain on you for a while. If you choose to learn the trumpet, your muscles will get tired very quickly for a long time. The reason why is because low brass instruments used a relaxed embouchure which would not work well learning trumpet. The type of embouchure would never be comparable to trumpet. The trumpet has a vary what I call refined embouchure. I think your instructor is correct in advising you. Do not give up on what you are good at. It will look bad if you continue on after high school with music in college. You should definitely ask him why he or she has made the suggestion. At some point, I would say to learn trumpet if you want to. But if you really feel strongly about it, then learn it. But also keep up your skills on the other instruments.
One final note is that if you do not practice all of you instruments every day, you lose the strength of the embouchure needed in a particular instrument and the sound quality will suffer greatly.
