Combating Homesickness For International Students
Living away from home for college may be exciting, if you are moving to another country it can very well be both exciting and overwhelming. As an international student you will find living away from home, in a different country may even be a little stressful at times. If you find yourself feeling homesick, there are a number of things you can do to ease the discomfort of being away from your familiar environment and home.
Students living away from home for the first time may feel overwhelmed with their new surroundings. In this case, make sure you find someone who you can talk to you. You may also find comfort with other international students who are going through a similar experience. When you share a common experience with a friend or trusted counselor, you will find the transition phase is easier to deal with.
Prepare for your homesickness. You can do this by having phone cards or another type of instant access to family members or friends in your originating country. You can also bring pictures and other memorabilia to help you remember home. If you have a favorite pair of brown boots you always used to climb with, bring them along on your journey. Imitate the feeling of home in your own space while away at college.
Make sure to stay active. Studying abroad is your time to challenge yourself academically as well as involve yourself in a new culture. Fill up your time studying, volunteering, and making new friends. When you are busy you will have little time for being homesick.
Be patient. Learning a new language and fitting into a new culture can be overwhelming. Be patient and you may even find yourself following the latest trends in men’s watches, that you once thought were silly. Talk to people from different cultures and communities. This will broaden your perspective on the outside world.
Remain an active member of your campus community. Even though you feel more comfortable with people who speak your own language and share similar backgrounds, part of the college experience is to mingle with people of other cultures and backgrounds. Try to speak the language of the country you are staying in as much as possible. This will help you learn the language and the people around you will appreciate your effort.
Stay healthy. Your parents are not there to make sure you are getting enough sleep, food and exercise. This is now your responsibility. Make sure to have a healthy balance of all of these things in your college life. Incorporate new experience with old hobbies you may appreciate. If you like designing different jewelry like men wedding bands, do not give it up. Find time to relax to do the things that bring you peace.
